Exponential technologies are gaining further traction. The fourth industrial revolution is ramping up. Companies and who will succeed with their digital transformations and embrace the future are currently experimenting and investing heavily in a merger of AR, VR, AI and IOT.  (Datacom, introduction Pop Up Reality Shop at the Future-Go Workshop on 20.6.17 )

Pop-Up Reality Shop was the first stage of a research project that aims to develop a new hybrid retail concept, which combines physical and online shopping strategies. The project is part of the research undertaken at the arc/sec Lab for Digital Spatial Operations at the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Auckland.

Under supervision of Uwe Rieger and Yinan Liu a team of four architectural Post Graduate students, Anita Chin, Linus Goh, Ricky Tung and Bevin Liang worked on a one year project to investigate how we can merge the qualities of a tactile shopping experience  with the advantages of online browsing

Working in collaboration with DATACOM  the project was based in Auckland’s first innovation hub for Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR); the ‘AR/VR Garage’.

The aim of Pop-Up Reality Shop is to generate a real time responsive retail concept. The driving vehicle for this investigation was a prototypical 1:1 installation.  The team utilized Head Mounted Displays (HMD) to create multisensory user interaction with haptic-digital space. The setup interlinked a kinetic physical construction with a responsive digital design.  Microsoft HoloLenses were used in conjunction with a motion capture system and a live render programme to create a performative physical environment that offered a responsive and intimate shopping experience.
